English

China has two holiday systems: official public holidays (which follow the Gregorian calendar with makeup workdays, covered by the Holidays tool) and traditional festivals (which follow the lunar calendar). Most traditional festivals are lunar-based, so their Gregorian dates shift every year: Spring Festival falls between late January and mid-February, Mid-Autumn between September and early October, and Dragon Boat between late May and late June. Only Qingming (April 4–6) and the Winter Solstice (Dec 21–23) are fixed on the solar calendar.

Each festival has its signature food: dumplings or rice cakes for Spring Festival, tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) for Lantern, zongzi (rice dumplings) for Dragon Boat, mooncakes for Mid-Autumn, and Laba porridge for the Laba festival. For travelers, festival dates matter twice: avoid the huge Spring Festival and National Day crowd peaks and price surges, or deliberately time a trip to catch a festival's folk customs — lantern fairs, dragon-boat races, temple markets. Spring Festival and National Day are by far the busiest travel windows in China, with tickets and hotels selling out well ahead.

FAQ

What is China's most important traditional festival?

Spring Festival (the 1st of the 1st lunar month) is the most important and also the year's biggest travel peak. Mid-Autumn and Dragon Boat are next.

Why do festival dates change every year?

Most festivals follow the lunar calendar, which is shorter than the solar year, so their Gregorian dates drift. Only Qingming and the Winter Solstice are fixed to the solar calendar.

Which festival peaks should travelers avoid?

Spring Festival and National Day (around Oct 1–7) are the biggest travel peaks of the year — tickets, flights and hotels sell out. Avoid or book very far ahead.
