Metro is the default choice for getting around big Chinese cities — cheap, punctual and dense. Fares are distance-based, mostly starting at 2–3 yuan and capping around 10, far cheaper than a taxi and free of traffic and parking headaches. Nearly every city lets you ride by scanning your phone: the transit code (乘车码) in Alipay or WeChat, or the local metro app, binds your card and opens the gate with one scan.
First and last trains vary by city but generally start around 6:00 and end between 22:30 and 23:30, sometimes extended on holidays. Peak hours (7:30–9:00 and 17:30–19:00) get very crowded, especially at hubs like Beijing's Guomao or Shanghai's People's Square. Using Amap or Baidu Maps for "metro" gives live interchanges and last-train times — easier than reading a line map alone.
