English

Reading the price on a Chinese menu is only step one — you also need to say "58 kuai", "er bai wu" or "yao san ba" when ordering, giving your phone number or bargaining. Chinese numbers use place-value words (ten, hundred, thousand, ten-thousand, hundred-million) that work very differently from reading digits one by one.

This tool converts numbers, money and phone numbers into natural Chinese readings with pinyin, so you can practice out loud.

FAQ

Why does 10001 read "one ten-thousand zero one"?

Chinese groups digits in fours (ones, ten-thousands, hundred-millions). Consecutive empty places get a single "zero": 10001 = ten-thousand + zero + one.

When do you use "er" vs "liang" for two?

"Er" is common before ten/hundred (er bai = 200), while "liang" is used before measure words (liang kuai = 2 yuan). This tool uses "liang" to start money readings.

Why do phone numbers use "yao" for 1?

In speech, 1 is often "yao" and 7 "guai" to avoid confusion. This tool's digit-by-digit mode reads 1 as "yao".
